I have a secret, a guilty pleasure, if you will.  I love Spam.

Don’t judge.

I really think Spam has an unfair reputation.  Most people who are grossed out or are dismissive of Spam have either never actually had Spam themselves, or had Spam that was not properly cooked to its rightful deliciousness.  They have simply fell prey to the stereotype that Spam is a poor-man’s meat and is gross and unappetizing.

Don’t be a lemming – please give Spam a try.  You may be pleasantly surprised and decide you love Spam, like I do.  So, go have some Spam, and love it proudly.  :)

A ridiculously easy and yummy recipe with Spam is Spam musubi.  You should try it sometime.

Spam Musubi is probably the most popular food associated with Hawaii (some call it Spam sushi or Spam sandwiches).  These delicious bites of goodness can be found at every convenience shop on the islands (oh how I miss having a ABC store at every corner!).

A few weeks ago, while daydreaming about tropical locations such as Hawaii, I also started daydreaming about eating a spam musubi in Hawaii.  (Yes, I daydream about food quite a bit.  That’s normal, right?  Don’t answer that.)

While I couldn’t make Hawaii a reality, I did make eating some spam musubi a reality when my musubi maker came in the mail.

Let’s make some Spam Musubi!!!

Start with a can of Spam and a musubi maker.

Empty the Spam out of the can.  I know it doesn’t look very appetizing right now, but trust me, magic will happen.

Slice the Spam into 8-10 even pieces.

Pan fry the Spam pieces and medium-high heat.  Don’t add any oil to pan fry the Spam.  There’s a perfect amount of fat in the Spam for this.

Flip the slices and pan fry the other side.  Mmmm … magic is happening here.

Mix together some soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sugar until the sugar has dissolved.  Pour the mixture onto the Spam pieces.

Turn off heat and transfer the Spam pieces onto a plate.

Cut some nori sheets in half lengthwise.

This is furikake, which is a Japanese rice seasoning you can pick up at any Asian market.

Place a musubi-maker, or any rice mold, in the center of a nori sheet.

Press some rice into the mold.

Sprinkle some furikake over the rice.

Place a Spam piece on the layer.

Sprinkle some more furikake.

Place some more rice on top.

Use the musubi-maker handle to press over the layer of Spam, rice and furikake.

Press down firmly so that everything is packed in tight.

Remove the Spam musubi from the musubi-maker by holding the handle down while pulling the mold upward.

Quickly wrap the nori around the rice.  Use a few grains of rice to stick the nori together at the ends if necessary.

Now it’s time to eat!  Nom nom nom! :)

Spam Musubi

Makes 8-10 servings
Total cooking time:  40 mins

Ingredients

  • 1 can Spam, sliced into 10-12 slices
  • 3 cups uncooked short-grain white rice
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 6 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup oyster sauce
  • 5-6 sheets of sushi nori (dry seaweed)
  • Furikake (optional)
  • A musubi-maker

Directions

  1. Cook rice in a rice cooker.
  2. Place the cooked rice in a bowl, a stir in rice vinegar.  Set aside to cool.
  3. Slice the Spam into 8-10 even pieces, or to desired thickness.
  4. In a sauté pan on medium-high heat, pan fry the slices of Spam.  No oil is necessary here.  Fry each side for about 1-2 minutes, or until you reach your desired level of crispness.
  5. In a separate bowl, stir together soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sugar until sugar is completely dissolved.
  6. Pour the soy sauce mixture over the Spam pieces.
  7. Transfer the Spam pieces to a plate.
  8. Cut nori sheets in half lengthwise and lay on a flat work surface.
  9. Place a musubi-maker (or any rice press) in the center of a nori sheet.
  10. Scoop a generous mound of rice into the mold.  Use the musubi-maker handle to press the rice tightly down inside.
  11. Shake a thin layer of furikake over the rice.
  12. Place a slice of Spam on top.  Shake another thin layer of furikake over the Spam.
  13. Add another layer of rice.  Press down again with the musubi-maker handle and make sure everything is packed in tight.
  14. Remove the Spam Musubi from the musubi-maker by holding the handle down with one hand, and use the other to pull the mold upward.
  15. Quickly wrap the nori around the rice.  Use a few grains of rice to stick the nori together at ends if necessary.
